If you have a severe toothache, it is crucial that you see your emergency dentist in Murphy in order to get to the root of the problem. However, you may be experiencing quite a bit of pain until you are able to make it to your urgent appointment. The good news is that there are some steps that you can take at home in order to relieve pain until you can be treated. Here are a few remedies that could potentially help you get some relief.
Saltwater Rinse
This is a good first step if you are experiencing a serious toothache. This is because saltwater is a natural disinfectant and can help to wash away food particles that are lodged between the teeth. Rinsing with saltwater can also help to reduce inflammation and heal oral wounds. Just mix about ½ teaspoon into a glass of warm water.
Cold Compress
A cold compress causes the blood vessels in the area to constrict, therefore numbing some of the pain you are experiencing. The cold temperature can also help to reduce inflammation and swelling. This is especially the case if your toothache is a result of trauma. Just wrap a towel around a bag of ice and place it on the affected area for 20 minutes at a time.
Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide with equal parts water to use as a mouthwash. This can help to kill bacteria, relieve pain, and reduce inflammation in the mouth. Remember that this should not be swallowed.
Clove Oil
Cloves are a traditional remedy for numbing nerves because the primary compound of the spice is eugenol, which is a natural anesthetic. Place about two drops of oil onto a cotton ball and place it on the tooth. You could also chew on a whole clove in order to release the oil. Keep this in place for up to half an hour or until the pain subsides.
Peppermint Tea
Not only does peppermint tea have a nice flavor, but it also has numbing ability. Take about 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves into a cup of boiling water and steep for 20 minutes. Once it cools, swish it around your mouth. If you have peppermint teabags, take a used teabag, and apply it to the affected area once it cools down and is only slightly warm.
Thyme
This herb has powerful antibacterial and antioxidant properties that can help to treat toothaches. Apply a few drops of thyme essential oil as well as a few drops of water to a cotton ball. Apply it to the affected area.
Remember that the most important thing you should do is see your dentist if you are dealing with a toothache. But until then, give some of these home remedies a try. You may just find one that works!
