Many people deal with extensive tooth loss due to aging, tooth decay, illness, or injuries. Dentures have allowed many of them to restore their smiles with high-quality restorations that are amazingly lifelike and incredibly comfortable. While dentures are made out of durable materials, years of use can cause them to develop stains and discoloration. Here are a few ways you can make sure your dentures stay white and bright over the course of their lifespan.
How Can I Keep My Dentures Looking Their Best?
There are a few hygiene practices you should observe to keep your dentures looking great in the long run. These include:
- Rinse your dentures whenever you remove them. This will eliminate much of the food debris that can lead to plaque and discoloration. It’s a great idea to rinse your dentures after enjoying heavily pigmented beverages like coffee, red wine, or tea.
- Soak your dentures in warm water or an approved soaking solution when you are not using them. This will prevent bacteria from growing on them while making sure they stay moist to prevent warping.
- Handle your dentures carefully. While dentures are made from durable materials, they can be damaged if mishandled. When caring for them over your sink, cover the counter with folded towels and fill the sink with warm or lukewarm water to create a cushion in case you drop them.
- Continue seeing your dentist regularly. Your dentist can treat your dentures to remove stains and keep them working properly. You should have dental visits every six months or as recommended.
What Products Should I Use to Clean My Dentures?
Some products are better for cleaning dentures than others. A few items to stock up on include:
- Non-abrasive toothpaste: Whitening toothpastes can scratch your dentures and ruin their finish. Stick to non-abrasive gel toothpastes.
- Approved denture-soaking solution: These products are specially formulated for denture care and can be purchased online or at a local pharmacy.
What Products Are Bad for Dentures?
Certain products can be harmful to your dentures. A few items to never use on your dentures include:
- Harsh cleaners, including chlorine and bleach
- Household cleaners such as glass cleaner or metal polishing agents
- Abrasive toothpastes
- Acidic chemicals like lemon juice or baking soda
- Hard-bristled toothbrushes
- Warm or cold water, which can cause dentures to warp and break
Dentures should be a long-term solution to extensive tooth loss. With proper care, your dentures can last for more than ten years.
