Exams & Cleanings

At Murphy Dental Home, we encourage you to safeguard your smile with a visit to our office twice a year to remove the stubborn plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing can’t remove, along with identifying warning signs of problems in their early stages. Our goal is to help you enjoy a clean and healthy smile for a lifetime!

The Importance of Preventative Care

We, at Murphy Dental Home, believe that preventative care is the foundation of a healthy mouth. Your exams and cleanings are essential components of preventative dentistry which is the practice of preventing dental disease from developing and keeping your mouth healthy. Preventative care will translate into less involved and costly treatments down the road, allowing you to enjoy a healthy smile for years to come.

The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist at least every six months for cleanings, exams, and consultations for treatments you may need. Regular visits to our office will reflect not only on your oral health but will also benefit your overall health. Studies have shown that bacteria present in gum disease is also found in the plaque that causes clogged arteries and heart disease. This bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your mouth, so it is important to keep your teeth and mouth clean and healthy.

What Should You Expect During Your Exam?

Your exam will start with digital x-rays to reveal any tooth decay, bone loss, or any other problems. Dr. Gandhi will examine your gums and evaluate their health to ensure you are free of gum disease. Next, she will check each of your teeth to look for signs of decay or damage.

Your exam will include an oral cancer screening which can potentially be a life-saver. Dr. Gandhi will also perform a bite analysis and will conduct an aesthetic evaluation to determine if your smile would benefit from cosmetic dentistry procedures.

During your visit, Dr. Gandhi will identify any potential problems that you may not be aware of, allowing for intervention before the condition progresses. At the conclusion of your exam, she will recommend a customized treatment plan based on your needs.

What Should You Expect During Your Cleaning?

Our professional dental cleanings help prevent tooth decay and preserve and strengthen your gums and teeth. Your professional cleaning will begin with Dr. Gandhi or our dental hygienist removing any plaque or tartar buildup present around your gumline and in between your teeth using an instrument known as a scaler. Next, we will polish your teeth using a gritty polisher followed by professional flossing to remove any remaining plaque or tartar.

Preventative Care at Home

Proper dental hygiene practices at home are a key component of your overall dental health. We recommend brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash regularly. Keeping your mouth clean will help prevent oral problems from developing, which can help you avoid needed future treatments.
